St. Cyril of Alexandria Catholic School opened in September of 1929 with a student enrollment of 375 students. Since that time, the Parish and the school have shown a resilience formed in faith and practice that are exhibited in the school motto “Faith~Academics~ Service” which imparts upon the students and community to love and serve their neighbors as yourself as Jesus teaches (Mt 22:39).

That service of neighbors is and has been at the core of the school and parish mission throughout its history – as evidenced in a parish that survived the Great Depression through the kindness of a priest that provided out of work men in the parish with both sustenance and work; an effort shortly thereafter that built the parish and school footprint; a parish community that survived both social and economic turmoil; and in 2005 a parish that survived a potential closing following the leadership of sixth grader with a chronic illness, Tommy Geromichalos, who set aflame a movement among the parish and the larger community to keep the school open and by showing in word and deed the motto of the school he fought so vigorously to preserve so that it might continue to raise young men and women to love and serve their neighbors as themselves.

Again, in 2012 we faced closing again.  This time a group of business men and women appealed to become a part of the Independence Mission Schools and with the leadership of Mr. Joseph Donnelly, we were again able to keep our doors open! We started the 2012 – 2013 school year with the addition of adding a pre-school classroom.  We are now proudly accommodating students from Pre-k to Grade 8.

SS. Cyril & Philomena serves today as a beacon for the increasingly ethnically and economically diverse communities from Southwest Philadelphia to East Lansdowne and Yeadon to Upper Darby. Much as the school led the community through the dark days of the depression and in the dark hours of 2005, SS. Cyril & Philomena’s serves as a refuge for those it serves who themselves are a reflection of the church and its teachings.

SS. Cyril & Philomena School represents a significant force for the teachings and mission of the Catholic Church in Eastern Delaware County. Put simply, we are excited to continue teaching with the excellent traditions of Catholic Education. We are proud to still have our doors open, we look forward to having our student body grow. It is our deepest pleasure to serve the wonderful families of this fantastic community. We look forward to working with you and your family!
